How to Enhance Image Resolution in Photoshop (2026 Guide)

How Photoshop enhances image resolution and quality

To enhance image resolution in Photoshop without making the result look artificial, treat the job as three separate steps: remove noise, increase pixel dimensions, then restore edge sharpness. The tools overlap but are not interchangeable, and using them in the wrong order wastes most of their benefit. The workflow below follows that sequence: damage control first, enlargement second and sharpening last.

Step by step in Photoshop

These steps work in Photoshop 2023–2026. Always work on a copy of the original — every one of these operations is destructive to some degree.

  1. 01

Start in Camera Raw: noise and optics

Filter → Camera Raw Filter. Under Detail, apply Noise Reduction (luminance first, color only if needed) — sharpening amplifies noise, so denoise before anything else. Enable Lens Corrections → Remove Chromatic Aberration if edges show color fringing.

  2. 02

    Try Super Resolution first

In Camera Raw (or Adobe Bridge), right-click the image → Enhance → Super Resolution. It doubles the linear dimensions (4× the pixels) using machine learning and is the single biggest quality win in Photoshop for small photos. It works on RAW and JPEG alike.

  3. 03

Or upscale with Preserve Details 2.0

For custom sizes: Image → Image Size, pick your dimensions, then choose “Preserve Details 2.0” under Resample and adjust the Reduce Noise slider. It is Photoshop’s other AI upscaler — use whichever fits (Super Resolution for 2×/4×, Preserve Details for arbitrary sizes).

  4. 04

    Sharpen with Smart Sharpen

Filter → Sharpen → Smart Sharpen. Start around Amount 120–150%, Radius 1–1.5px, and reduce Noise in the same dialog to avoid re-amplifying grain. View at 100% and sharpen for the final display size — an image shown small needs less sharpening than one shown full-screen.

  5. 05

    Final tone and export

Apply your usual exposure, contrast and color grading, then export with File → Export As at JPEG quality 80–90 (or PNG for graphics). Do not export at quality 100 — the file balloons for no visible gain.

What each tool is actually doing

Super Resolution and Preserve Details 2.0 are AI resamplers: they enlarge while reconstructing edges and texture, unlike classic bicubic which just interpolates. Smart Sharpen is classical edge enhancement — it makes transitions steeper but creates no new detail, which is why it comes after any enlargement. Camera Raw noise reduction smooths luminance noise so the sharpening step has less to amplify.

If your image has real focus blur, also try Filter → Sharpen → Shake Reduction (older builds) or a manual high-pass sharpen: duplicate the layer, Filter → Other → High Pass (2–3px), set blending to Overlay, and mask it to the areas that matter.

Don’t have Photoshop?

Photoshop is powerful but it is a subscription, a download and a learning curve. Picvant does not currently offer photo enhancement or AI upscaling, so use Photoshop or a dedicated upscaler when you need to repair an existing image. If you need a completely new visual instead, Picvant Image Studio can generate one from a text prompt.

Frequently asked

01What is the best Photoshop tool to increase resolution?+

Camera Raw’s Super Resolution (right-click → Enhance) for 2× or 4×, or Image Size with Preserve Details 2.0 for arbitrary dimensions. Both use machine-learning resampling.

02How do I sharpen a blurry photo in Photoshop?+

Filter → Sharpen → Smart Sharpen, starting at Amount 130%, Radius 1px. Mild softness responds well; heavy blur needs AI enhancement rather than sharpening, which only accentuates edges.

03Should I denoise or sharpen first?+

Denoise first. Sharpening amplifies noise, so sharpening a noisy image makes the noise sharper. Camera Raw Filter → Detail handles both in the right order.

04Is Super Resolution available for JPEGs?+

Yes — it works on RAW, DNG, JPEG and TIFF files. RAW sources give the best results because less detail has already been lost to compression.

05How much can I upscale in Photoshop before it looks bad?+

With Super Resolution or Preserve Details 2.0, 2× is usually seamless and 4× holds up well from decent sources. Beyond 4×, results soften no matter the tool.
