How to resize an image

01

Upload your image

Drag and drop a JPG, PNG or WebP, or paste from your clipboard. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

02

Set the new size

Type exact width and height with the aspect ratio locked, pick a common preset, or switch to percent scale.

03

Check and download

The before/after strip shows original and new dimensions in pixels and megapixels before you save.

Resolution vs file size vs quality

These three get confused constantly — they are related, but not the same thing. Knowing which one you actually need is the fastest route to the result you want.

Resolution
The pixel dimensions of the image — width × height. A 4000×3000 photo is 12 megapixels; a 800×600 copy of the same photo is 0.48 MP. Lowering resolution throws away pixels permanently.
File size
How many bytes the file takes on disk — KB or MB. It follows from resolution × compression quality × format, so a small file can still be high resolution, and vice versa.
Image quality
How much visual detail survives compression. JPEG quality 90 keeps detail; quality 20 shows blocky artifacts. PNG is lossless — it has no quality setting at all.

What size do you need?

Social media sizes

Instagram 1080×1080, link previews 1200×630, stories 1080×1920 — all one-click presets.

Web & email images

Resize heroes and banners to the width they actually render at, so pages stay fast.

Form requirements

Passport photos, ID uploads and job applications often specify exact pixel dimensions.

Print at the right DPI

A 6×4 inch print at 300 DPI needs 1800×1200 px. Resize to the pixel count, not the DPI tag.

Marketplace thumbnails

Shops and platforms each want their own square or wide crop size.

Frequently asked

01How do I change the resolution of a picture?+

Upload it, enter the width or height you need with the aspect-ratio lock on, and download. Resolution is simply width × height in pixels — the before/after strip shows both.

02Are my images uploaded to a server?+

No. Resizing runs entirely in your browser with the Canvas API — your image never leaves your device.

03How do I keep the aspect ratio?+

Keep the lock on and enter just one dimension; the other follows from the original ratio. Unlock it only when you deliberately want different proportions.

04Can I make an image bigger without losing quality?+

Up to about 130% the high-quality resampling here often holds up well. Beyond that, plain resizing stretches pixels. Use a dedicated AI upscaler if you need missing detail reconstructed; Picvant does not currently provide AI upscaling.

05What are megapixels?+

Width × height ÷ 1,000,000. A 1920×1080 image is about 2.1 MP. The resizer shows megapixels before and after so you can see exactly how much image you are keeping.
